Recruiting rewind: Florida State

Florida State fans couldn’t have asked for much more from Jimbo Fisher in his first signing day as the Seminoles’ head coach.

He and his staff lured in eight players from the ESPNU 150 list. They recruited two five-star players and nine four-star players. They closed on two of the best players in the country on signing day, and finished Wednesday with the No. 6 recruiting class in the country and the best in the ACC, according to Scouts Inc.

Not bad for a first go-around.

“Maybe we can move from 6 to 1,” Fisher said of the national rankings. “We’re not very far away from that.”

That’s thanks in large part to the commitments of five-star linebacker Jeff Luc and five-star corner Lamarcus Joyner.

“We may look back on Luc and Joyner and say they started the whole thing,” said Fisher. “They understand the importance of what they did.”

They were only a fraction of the signing day success, though. Most importantly, Florida State addressed its needs defensively, where the Seminoles have struggled most. FSU signed 24 players, including 14 on the defensive side. FSU added five defensive linemen, five linebackers and four cornerbacks to a group that will be under the direction of first-year coordinator Mark Stoops and a new scheme. Offensively, the Seminoles focused on replenishing the receiving corps and did so with five signees, as well as two tight ends.

Four players — Luc, defensive tackle Anthony McCloud, running back Debrale Smiley and quarterback Clint Trickett — have been enrolled in school since the start of the semester.

Florida State gave its class a boost on signing day with the addition of outside linebacker Christian Jones and wide receiver Christian Green, two in-state members of the ESPNU 150 who are ranked among the top 10 at their respective positions.

It was an impressive effort, considering the recent retirement of one of college football’s best closers, Bobby Bowden, and the fact that five new assistants have been in their offices for less than a month.

“We’ve put so much on recruiting, which is true,” Fisher said, “but now we’ve got to develop the players.”

FSU women hold on for 83-73 win over No. 9 North Carolina

Jacinta Monroe scored 16 points and visiting No. 13 Florida State held on to beat ninth-ranked North Carolina 83-73 on Monday night after nearly blowing a 19-point lead.

Courtney Ward added 13 points for FSU (19-4, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), which had its big second-half lead whittled all the way down to a point three times in the final minutes. But the Seminoles put together an eight-point spurt in the final 3 minutes to finally pull away, sealing their first win in Chapel Hill since the 2000-01 season.

“We talked about it before the game — the team that was more mentally tough was the team that was going to win the basketball game,” Florida State coach Sue Semrau said in a news release. “They put their mind to it. It was good for them to be rewarded.”

Italee Lucas scored 20 points to lead UNC (16-4, 4-2), which dug a big hole for itself early in the second half.

Monroe was huge for FSU all night, finishing with 17 rebounds and two blocked shots in 34 minutes. She hit a pair of free throws with the Seminoles clinging to a 66-65 lead with 3:04 left to start the decisive run.

Florida State falls to Duke 70-56

The ‘Noles lost on the scoreboard.  But FSU won elsewhere.  Vegas expected them to lose by 12 or 13.  The margin was 14.  But FSU won in other areas.  Most importantly, the ‘Noles did not need a win in Cameron Indoor to reach their goal of a 9-7 season in the ACC.  Further, FSU didn’t suffer any injuries.  And the ‘Noles gained valuable game experience in a hostile environment.  And perhaps the loss will help keep the team focused throughout the stretch run.

So, aside from the fact that Duke is a better team than FSU, why did the ‘Noles lose the game?  Did Duke dominate every facet of the game?  What can we learn from FSU’s performance?  Did the same issues that have plagued FSU all season resurface?  Or did FSU develop some new weakness?   Visit Tomahawk Nation to find out.

Demar Dorsey committed to Gators, but likes FSU

…and won’t decide until signing day.

After speculation that he’s headed to Florida State, Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson defensive back Demar Dorsey said he’s still a Florida Gator — for now.

A final decision between Florida and Florida State won’t take place until National Signing Day on Feb. 3, Dorsey said.

“Right now I’m committed to the Gators,” Dorsey said Wednesday. “Tallahassee was a great city, I had fun up there, got to meet the coaches and stuff, got to know the city. I had a great time.”

USC could enter the picture for Dorsey, who is expected to visit the Southern California campus this weekend.

The Gators have 26 commitments and the country’s best recruiting class, but Dorsey’s status hasn’t been solidified in weeks. Dorsey has said he’s anywhere from 65 to 95 percent Gator since December, but that percentage seems to be dropping.

Dorsey said he’s currently torn between Florida and FSU, which seems to be working a little harder on the Sentinel’s No. 75 player in the state. FSU is expected to visit Dorsey this week in South Florida.

Dorsey said UF coaches haven’t exactly been blowing up his phone.

“I haven’t talked to anyone lately,” Dorsey said. “I talked to coach Meyer last week, Thursday. He just was checking on me seeing how I was doing and stuff.”

Florida State Seminoles’ defense returns in key victory against Virginia Tech

FSU Basketball

TALLAHASSEE — Leonard Hamilton insisted his Florida State team wasn’t desperate – that the Seminoles weren’t in a must-win predicament here on Saturday night against Virginia Tech – but FSU’s 63-58 victory against the Hokies said something different.

After two lackadaisical defeats, FSU faced the prospect of burying itself into a 1-3 hole in the Atlantic Coast Conference. So from the beginning here at the Tucker Center, the Seminoles (14-4, 2-2 ACC) played with perhaps as much passion as they had all season – especially on defense.

Florida State held the Hokies to 34.5 percent shooting, forced 18 turnovers and blocked 9 shots. And though Virginia Tech rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final minutes to make it a 1-point game with four seconds to play, the Hokies trailed for nearly 37 minutes and never seriously threatened FSU until it was too late.

The victory allows the Seminoles to exhale, if only for the moment.

“It would have been three games in a row we would have lost, two on our home court,” said Derwin Kitchen, the FSU point guard who scored 11 points. “You don’t want to do that … it was a big game. We had to come out of here with a 2-2 record [in the ACC].”

The Seminoles’ performance was far from perfect. They turned it over 23 times, shot just 40.9 percent from the field and made just 4 of its 17 3-point attempts. Solomon Alabi, the sophomore center, led a sloppy offensive effort with 13 points.

But FSU relied on an old friend that had recently gone missing: defense. Hamilton said there wasn’t a magic cure to the defensive woes his team had experienced earlier in the week in consecutive defeats against Maryland and N.C. State.

Those games, though, taught the Seminoles some lessons.

“If you don’t play defense for 40 minutes, if you take possessions off, that’s what will happen,” Hamilton said of FSU’s recent losses. “I think our guys learned from the films. They responded very well in practice.”

Like Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez and N.C. State’s Justin Woods, the Hokies’ Malcolm Delaney padded his scoring average. Delaney, the ACC’s leading scorer, finished with 23 points, including the 3-pointer with four seconds left that cut FSU’s lead to 59-58.

Still, Hokies coach Seth Greenberg said, “They made Malcolm work the whole game.”

To do so, the Seminoles went back to fundamentals, Hamilton said.

“When got to the top 25, we thought we made it,” said FSU forward Chris Singleton, whose five blocks tied a career high. “And that’s something that we worked so hard to get to … we just let our minds wander off.”

Not on Saturday night, though. The Seminoles will now take a week-long break before hosting Georgia Tech on Jan 24. Hamilton said there is plenty of room for the Seminoles to improve but, he said of his team, “I think they’re growing up a little bit.”
