Florida State University got a huge boost in becoming the No. 1 class in 2012 after it was reported Wednesday that Jameis Winston, regarded as the nation’s top quarterback prospect, had committed to the Seminoles.
On Wednesday, the 6?4?, 190-pound signal-caller from Hueytown, Alabama, announced his college decision on ESPNU, which may have shocked some as he picked the Seminoles over the home-state Crimson Tide.
LSU was also reportedly among the finalists considered by Winston
“Well you know it’s been tough, tough the whole time,” Winston said via ESPNU. “I feel confident in my decision. I think I want to be a Florida State Seminole.”
The decision, according to Winston, rated as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2012 class by ESPN and the No. 3 quarterback by Rivals.com, came down to feel.
“I am just comfortable and that’s where I wanted to be,” the dual-threat prospect said. “God has blessed me the whole way. I see myself there in the near future.”
Winston is the 10th player on the ESPNU 150 list to commit to Florida State.
During his junior year, Winston recorded 28 TD, while throwing for 2,300 yards and running for 800 in 2010.
It is considered another brilliant signing for FSU which now has 16 commitments for the 2012 class.
With his touted football IQ coupled with his elite skill set, Winston is expected to give the Seminoles an heir apparent to E.J. Manuel as well as bolstering the roster with a young, elite QB prospect.
Though he has committed to playing football at FSU, it still not certain Winston will one day lead the Seminoles under center as he is also sensational in one other sport- – baseball.
He must decide between playing college football or play baseball for the Seminoles.
Winston batted .424 with seven homers and 15 doubles last spring. As a pitcher, Winston was 8-3 with 92 strikeouts this past campaign.
